The parents' guide to what's in this movie. On life's difficult road, it can be comforting to know that others have gone through the same thing and come out the other side. Positive Role Models & Representations While his parents have unfairly put him in the middle of their divorce, Jamie is a conscientious son who's there for his mom during a crisis, even though it comes at some personal sacrifice. In terms of representation, Jamie's friends are ethnically diverse, and Grace's friend is gay. Jamie broadens the media's traditional view of masculinity: He cries in front of his friends and enjoys poetry. One character slaps another hard across the face and flips a table over in anger. Character expresses suicidal ideations, and there's an active debate about suicide as a form of compassionate euthanasia. Teacher describes cruel treatment in historic military situations. Infidelity leads to divorce. One use of "f--k. " Also "bollocks" and "God! " used as an exclamation. Drinking, Drugs & Smoking Stay up to date on new reviews. In HOPE GAP, viewers are introduced to mild-mannered Edward ( Bill Nighy), who -- after 29 years of marriage -- plans to divorce his overbearing wife, Grace ( Annette Bening). To do so, he enlists the help of his adult son, Jamie ( Josh O'Connor). Is it any good? As much as this dreary drama looks like a movie, it's not: It's a play. It's only cinematic element is the sweeping landscape photography that turns the crisp, cold beauty of Seaford, Sussex, into a metaphor for Grace's chilly marriage. Speaking of Grace, in that role, Bening proves she's a director's fairy godmother: You can hand her a mousy script, and she'll turn in a performance so heart rending, ferocious, and original that the film transforms. (Her British accent here is a shock, but she nails it, of course, which prompts the realization that if she really were a Brit, we'd be calling her Dame by now. ) Her co-stars turn in equally remarkable performances, but they have less to work with. Nighy's Edward is a mild, reserved teacher who volunteers as a Wikipedia contributor for fun: When he falls in love with another woman, he finds the crutch to leave his wife, but only by using his adult son as a shield. And Jamie is a chip off the old block, also shrinking in the presence of his mother, a woman who shows her love by picking at and hammering her family. But unfortunately Hope Gap is all talk and no action. The characters' conversations could take place anywhere -- like, say, a stage. In fact, it's adapted from one of writer-director William Nicholson's own plays. A two-time Academy Award-nominated screenwriter ( Gladiator, Shadowlands) Nicholson may be too close to the material. The movie is based on his own parents' divorce after 33 years of marriage. Certainly, it's possible to pull off a talky film about divorce -- see Marriage Story and The Squid and the Whale -- but this attempt lacks the levity and relatability of those scripts. Perhaps Hope Gap 's biggest contribution will be marking the point where moviegoers finally start saying, "Well, that director's no Noah Baumbach. " Talk to your kids about... Families can talk about how Hope Gap portrays marriage problems. Is it realistic or "Hollywoodized"? How do problems between spouses tend to affect a family? Discuss the role of communication in a successful relationship. How does the film fill us in on 29 years of communication problems between Grace and Edward? Who's the main character here? Does knowing that this is a semi-autobiographical story about writer/director William Nicholson's parents, who divorced after 33 years of marriage, affect your answer to that question? Can the "lead character" be different than the "main character"? Grace is a poetry anthologist. What's an anthology? Is the film an anthology, too? Taken from Dante Rossetti's poem "Sudden Light, " what is the meaning of the line "I have been here before"? Do you find that idea comforting? Our editors recommend All-too-real divorce drama isn't kid stuff; strong language. Heartfelt dramedy has strong story and characters. Book-based romance has sex, drinking, language. Find-your-bliss film appeals but raises questions, too. '80s comedy-drama has mature themes, profanity. A family falls apart -- for adults only. Hope gap where to watch. Very enjoyable drama about an couple whose marriage is strained and break up and the effects on each and their grown son. Some humour but a serious film. Performances are first class and as usual Annette Bening is outstanding. John O'Connor (Gods Own Country) also is a stand out. Dont be sad that Bojack Horseman is ending Someone once told me that a show either dies a Futurama or airs long enough to become the Simpsons.
I am gonna watch it just because of that soundtrack in the trailer. All the BEST <3. If god takes his wife, so much trouble for the god coz u know liam neeson. Marty and Robbie hav been butt buddies since before the last waltz, the way Marty framed Robbie vs the rest of the band made Levon, Richard and Rick resent him the first time they made a movie together. and now look what he names the project. sheesh Marty ur better than that. Thank you William Nicholson for saving my Dinard Film Festival 2019. After viewing several so un-innovative "real stories" Red Joan, Fisherman's Friends) and "social realism" films (The Last Tree, VS - even though VS's world of rap battles was fascinating) I was getting really disappointed in British cinema.
Hope Gap made up for all that. It is beautifully acted (Annette Bening is extraordinary) deep and subtle, and does carry you away.

Movies | ‘Hope Gap’ Review: A Thin Line Between Love and War Annette Bening and Bill Nighy play a couple that has lost its way after 29 years of marriage. Credit... Robert Viglasky/Roadside Attractions and Screen Media Hope Gap Directed by William Nicholson Drama, Romance PG-13 1h 40m The dramatic portrait of a crumbling marriage or relationship often lends itself to intense performance, allowing actors to spar with one another while playing out heightened, if not uncommon, circumstances. Usually this involves harsh words, yelling, crying, thrown objects. This is true of Edward (Bill Nighy) and Grace (Annette Bening), the central couple in the writer and director William Nicholson’s intimate, sometimes engaging “Hope Gap. ” As the film begins, they are clearly in a Tennessee Williams-style, late-in-life rut: Edward is checked out, ambling through the motions of their day-to-day, while obsessively fact-checking Wikipedia. A restless Grace implores him to show the faintest interest in rekindling their connection and turns to aggressive tactics to get his attention. (Turning over the dinner table, for instance. ) When Edward announces he is leaving her for another woman just a few days before their 29th anniversary, Grace is blindsided and devastated. In the middle of it all is their adult son Jamie (Josh O’Connor), who must navigate their feelings while confronting how his parents have affected his own ability to maintain meaningful relationships. Edward and Grace are intellectuals — he a schoolteacher, she a retiree assembling a poetry anthology — living comfortably in the picturesque town of Seaford, England, and Nicholson’s script walks a fine line between flowery and restrained. Obvious metaphors comparing war and marriage abound. But while you’ve seen this portrait before, and better, Nighy and Bening are so in tune with their characters that such rote renderings are easily forgiven. Hope Gap Rated PG-13 for cursing while divorcing. Running time: 1 hour 40 minutes.
