Οχι καταχρηστικά - και σίγουρα όχι ηθελημένα (ή μήπως ναι;), με τον ίδιο τρόπο που η «Δύναμη Ξυπνάει» ήταν το «A New Hope» της νέας τριλογίας και το «Οι Τελευταίοι Τζεντάι» το «Η Αυτοκρατορία Αντεπιτίθεται» της εποχής μας, να που το «Skywalker Η Ανοδος» ενθουσιάζει (! ) μέχρι και τους Γούκι από την «Επιστροφή των Τζεντάι», διατηρώντας σαφώς τις αρετές αλλά και τις αδυναμίες ενός μεγάλου φινάλε. Από αυτήν την άποψη, ευτυχώς που στην καρέκλα του σκηνοθέτη κάθεται (ξανά) ο Τζ. Τζ. Εϊμπραμς που αφού εγκατέλειψε για ένα μόνο επεισόδιο την τριλογία (του), έρχεται εδώ για να ικανοποιήσει λες έναν προς έναν τον κάθε ένα ξεχωριστά από τα εκατομμύρια των fanboys που θα ήθελαν αυτό το τελευταίο επεισόδιο να είναι αυτό που θα πάρουν μαζί τους μέχρι το τέλος του κόσμου - σαν φυλαχτό, σαν παρακαταθήκη, σαν μια ελπίδα πως κανείς από τους αγαπημένους του ήρωες δεν έφυγε από αυτή τη ζωή ματαία και κανείς από όσους θα συνεχίσουν να ζουν δεν θα επιστρέψει για να τον προδώσει ξανά ποτέ. Με γνώση, πάθος και φυσικά την τεχνική του «παραμυθά» που ο Εϊμπραμς επιδεικνύει με την ίδια σύνεση, αλλά και στιβαρή αλαζονία των πρώτων χρόνων του Στίβεν Σπίλμπεργκ, η κατακλείδα της τρίτης τριλογίας είναι πρωταρχικά μια ιστορία ενηλικίωσης που ξεκινάει από την Ρέι - ή καλύτερα από το «Ποια είναι η Ρέι;» - και φτάνει μέχρι την ίδια την ουσία του «Πολέμου των Αστρων». Μια βαθιά συγκινητική ιστορία ενηλικίωσης για όλους όσους νιώθουν μόνοι μέσα στους γαλαξίες και αναζητούν την ταυτότητά τους - σαν έτοιμοι από καιρό για να έρθουν αντιμέτωποι ακόμη και με την πιο σκληρή αλήθεια. Μια μοντέρνα ιστορία ενηλικίωσης για τις οικογένειες στις οποίες ανήκουμε, αυτές στις οποίες νιώθουμε «σπίτι» και τις άλλες που τελικά μας στέλνουν παντοδύναμους στο δικό μας ταξίδι της ζωής. Η διάθεση είναι παιχνιδιάρικη - με νέους ήρωες του «σε ένα γαλαξιά πολύ πολύ μακριά» να κλέβουν εφήμερα την παράσταση στο πρώτο μέρος, ενισχύοντας εκτός από την «οικογένεια» των εννιά ταινίων και το merchandise - και το χιούμορ δίνει την old school γεύση ενός family movie - που, στην τελική ο «Πόλεμος των Αστρων» είναι μόνο τέτοιο, κυριολεκτικά και μεταφορικά. Είναι όμως το παιχνίδι με τη μνήμη (εδώ και μια από τις ωραιότερες διαχρονικά στιγμές του C-3PO) που σαν ιστός κάθε μικρής ή μεγάλης ιστορίας της συγκεκριμένης ταινίας, φλερτάρει όχι μόνο με τον «Αμλετ» αλλά και σύσσωμο το σαιξπηρικό oeuvre - είτε αυτό είναι (κυριολεκτικά) μια μάχη μέσα στην «Τρικυμία», είτε το φάντασμα του «Μάκβεθ» σαν αρχή και τέλος κάθε ιστορίας εκδίκησης, είτε μια σπαρακτική παραλλαγή πάνω στο φινάλε του «Ρωμαίος και Ιουλιέτα» - εδώ μια σκηνή ανθολογίας από σήμερα και για πάντα στο μεγάλο βιβλίο των σκηνών ανθολογίας του «Πολέμου των Αστρων». Ενώνοντας με όλους τους πιθανούς (κινηματογραφικούς και μη) τρόπους το παρελθόν με το παρόν του μύθου της διασημότερης saga του σινεμά, με το βλέμμα και την καρδιά καρφωμένη στην (προ)αιώνια μάχη της φωτεινής με τη σκοτεινή πλευρά, ο Εϊμπραμς, παρά τα 155 λεπτά που έχει στη διάθεσή του, βιάζεται να ανοίξει (πολλές) και να κλείσει (λιγότερες) ιστορίες, παλεύει ανάμεσα σε διαθέσεις επικές και φιλοδοξίες μετριοπάθειας, θέλει να μοιράσει σε δράση και χαρακτήρες χάνοντας συχνά και τα δύο, κόβει και ράβει - είναι φανερό - άτσαλα και σε στιγμές αψυχολόγητα για να φτάσει στο επιθυμητό τέλος. Είναι αμήχανος όταν πρέπει να εξηγήσει τι μας συνδέει με τα προηγούμενα ή απέναντι σε σεναριακές επιλογές που είναι φανερό ότι δεν τον βρίσκουν σύμφωνο. Είναι καλύτερος όταν απολαμβάνει να ενορχηστρώνει καθαρόαιμη δράση και όταν βρίσκει χώρο για να μιλήσει για τους αγαπημένους του ήρωες, τη νέα «οικογένεια» των Φιν, Πο, ΒB-8, Τσουμπάκα, Ρέι. Και εκεί - μπροστά στη μεγάλη ηρωίδα αυτής της τριλογίας - ο Τζ. Εϊμπραμς κάνει σαφώς μια δήλωση ζωής. Σε τέλειο timing του τέλους μιας ολόκληρης δεκαετίας τελειώνει κι ο ίδιος με το ταξίδι αυτογνωσίας ενός κοριτσιού εν μέσω μιας τιτάνιας μάχης ανάμεσα στο καλό και το κακό. Μαζί, κάνει και μια μικρή και σε στιγμές τόσο σπουδαία υπόκλιση σε ένα σινεμά που παρά τα εκατομμύρια που κοστίζει και τα δισεκατομμύρια που κερδίζει παραμένει μια «χειροποίητη» περιπέτεια που τιμά το μύθο, το σινεμά και τη Δύναμη.

Obviously the romance was a bit forced and Palpatine was only there to fill the void Snoke left, but I think they did a good job. Leia, Luke & Han got good storylines, so did Chewbacca. Lando felt a bit out of place, but it was nice to see how he got back in The Falcon to destroy the Fleet, just like in Episode VI (which is a lot of fan service, but I didn't mind. The two new female characters felt like they should've been included way earlier, but did fit in the story and fit with Poe and Finn as their friends. It was also super obvious that Abrams wanted to cut out Rose as much as possible, which (from her Greenpeace sort of character Johnson wrote) I understand. All in all, the only movie I liked the least was 'The Last Jedi. To me this wasn't bad at all. The story concluded nicely. But I agree that there weren't these 'Yeah I love Star Wars moments' except for the fact when a bunch of allies showed up.

As a big star wars fan that was a kid when Episode 1, 2 and 3 came out. I remember cringing at some of the acting and directing in those movies. although I enjoyed them because I wanted to enjoy them. This movie was easy to enjoy - the action was fine, the special effects were fine, everything I would expect from a Star Wars film was in here, there were twists and turns, lots of science type things that aren't explained, but of source it's Star Wars, it's not sci-fi, so it tends not to make sense. I really enjoyed it overall. It felt emotionally satisfying to me, I like the characters - Poe Dameron was less annoying on this one than the previous two. Finn seemed more mature, although less involved. Rey was great, and Kylo Ren/Ben Solo was great. They don't waste time - bringing in the first twist of the story during the opening crawl. This continues right through - with lots of additional info that adds a bit to the Star Wars canon. I think it complemented The Last Jedi and the Force Awakens quite well.
I will definitely watch this one again. It had a pretty nice conclusion - leaving lots open for further exploration/speculation/interpretation.

Han and chewi best combo in the galaxy. Though the story is messy, too full, plothole ridden and there are (sometimes laughable) twists that test the suspension of disbelief,
a few redundant characters, and it's missing Star Wars traits (transitions) this final instalment was highly enjoyable and satisfying for a fan. Fast paced, packed with Force-full action and with superb acting (DRIVER, Ridley) and impressive CGI (Fisher) it still did not disappoint. The overall dark tone was a great departure from VIII.
