Based on my own experience when I was 9 years old (I am 59 now) I believe they were taken. I was at Glenelg sideshows with my 4 younger brothers and sister. A man gave us quite a lot of money to play on sideshows and hung around us for a long time. I didn't think of stranger danger - I just thought he was very nice giving us so much money and thought it was a bit strange that a grown up man wanted to hang around a bunch of kids. Then at some point, to my horror, I noticed my younger sister missing. I found her, maybe 300 meters along the beach with this man. I ran down the beach, grabbed her and took her back to my parents car and frantically told my parents. In those days the police station was right near those showgrounds and car park, but my dead beat parents never got involved in anything. We just all drove home. I remember how disturbed I felt that they did nothing when we knew that three other children around our age (the Beaumonts) had gone missing. When I was about 56, I went over the details with my sister, mainly trying to work out how old we were when this happened. Then on her urging. I went to police. She lived interstate, so I gave them the email conversations that I had with her about the incident. I can't be sure - it was 50 years ago, and I'm not sure how reliable my 9 year old memory is, but the image of him in my mind is consistent with that of Harry Phipps as shown in media photograph. He had a hat on (the sort men wore in the 60s) so I can't recognize the top of his head. What I noted in my statement to police though, is that he presented as being middle class. I wish now I had elaborated more. What I meant was that he was well dressed and well spoken. I was so disheartened when this latest search come to nothing. I thought this time they may have solved that crime. Sorry - I'm too scared to use my real name in writing this.

NEVER RARELY SOMETIMES ALWAYS is a deeply personal yet universal look at teenage pregnancy. Think of it as the opposite of Juno. Breathtakingly shows us every detail with sincere empathy. Sidney Flanigan gives an astonishing performance that communicates so much with so little. It is always incredibly refreshing to experience a film like this, one so unflinchingly honest yet steeped in compassion and empathy. It lingers in certain moments for uncomfortably long periods of time, precisely because that's how its protagonist is experiencing her situation. It understands her pain and trepidation and loneliness, and it's a prime example that you can still make a closed off character feel raw and vulnerable. A lot of that is due to Sidney Flanigan’s superb performance, one that manages to beautifully incorporate conflicting emotions into a seemingly blank expression. Her performance lives in the subtle changes in body language as she moves through the world around her, one filled with both perpetual threats and loving embraces. She… A quiet teenager named Autumn (newcomer Sidney Flanigan) looks like she carries the weight of the world on her shoulders. She’s introduced singing her heart out at a talent show—after her classmates have all either lip synced or done dance routines. There’s something melancholy in Autumn that’s not in most of her peers, and her only friend seems to be her cousin and co-worker Skylar (Talia Ryder). It’s not long before we learn what’s weighing on Autumn’s mind—she’s 17 and pregnant. Eliza Hittman, the writer/director of “Beach Rats, ” returns to Sundance with her best work yet, a powerful drama that’s mostly a character study of two fully-realized young women but also a commentary on how dangerous it is to be a teenage girl in America. With stunning performances from two completely genuine young leads, this is a movie people will talk about all year. FULL REVIEW TONIGHT Sundance #1 Eliza Hittman produces masterpieces: A. Never B. Rarely C. Sometimes D. Always ✅ 3 for 3. Perfection. This might form a feticide triptych with VERA DRAKE (2004) and 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS and 2 DAYS (2007). It's harrowing in a different way, told through quiet, little moments that italicize eyes and faces, and bruise through gestures, sighs and hushed, unspoken looks.  Faces will do most of the heavy-lifting here, sometimes through unbearable stretches that communicate volumes about why a teenager would want to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. As filmmaker Eliza Hittman states, "I'm just kind of interested in a cinema that's more behavioral and gestural. This unspoken bond. I think the film, at its core, is about new ways in which women help each other through difficult experiences. " The film is not just about the devastating lengths… Recent reviews Recognising your own alienation goes hand in hand with bursting through it. This is a process which, like a glass cage shattering into millions of tiny pieces, is both painful and spectacular to behold. I want to start by saying that this film is absolutely essential to the society we live in today. Stories like these NEED to be told. That being said, it suffers from a lack of soul. The film is bland in terms of its stylistic choices; opting to establish a harsh tone and relying on performances to give the audience relief in such a grim story. The performances themselves weren't bad, but rather the two main women should have been flipped. Something this film does do well is its pacing and heartfelt writing that gives the audience a great perspective. I'm hoping people can watch this an finally empathize better with women suffering from abuse and the suppression of choice. My review can be found omn Solzy at the Movies. Hittman's furious slant is not at odds w/her naturalism Eliza Hittman’s Never, Rarely, Sometimes, Always is one of those Sundance films that will surely get people talking. It is harsh, unforgiving, and frank about its subject matter – exactly as it should be. Heavy topics like a teenage girl desperately trying to get an abortion (while hiding it from her parents) deserve serious attention because they aren’t something that should be sugarcoated. Hittman’s film not only serves to challenge viewers to pay direct attention, but also to open the eyes of the ignorant as well. The film opens with Autumn (Sidney Flanigan) coming off a seemingly abusive relationship with her boyfriend. We soon realize that the boy has gotten the seventeen-year-old pregnant. Autumn ultimately decides not to tell her… Autumn is seventeen years old, pregnant, and, worst of all, living in a man’s world. At Sundance, Eliza Hittman’s terrific NEVER RARELY SOMETIMES ALWAYS was reduced in daily parlay to “the abortion movie, ” but this portrait of aggrieved honesty and newly forged faith in your fellow woman is so much more. What’s most curious is where Hittman establishes her characters’ challenges. Paying for the medical procedure and booking an appointment is merely a series of off-screen cash hand-offs in easily booked appointments with sweetly supportive staffers. It can certainly be read as a vision of an incredibly fortunate young woman, making the actual medical process look so easy that NEVER RARELY SOMETIMES ALWAYS feels like a Planned Parenthood advertisement meant… Writer-director Eliza Hittman takes a stark and unflinching look at abortion in “Never Rarely Sometimes Always, ” a drama that doesn’t talk about a teen girl’s wrenching decision than show the emotional stakes of making it. Seventeen-year-old Autumn (played with soul and steel by Sidney Flanigan) is feeling ill. She goes to a clinic in her rural Pennsylvania town, where she is offered a “self-administered” test — the same one she could have bought at the pharmacy. The women there give her an ultrasound, and tell Autumn she’s about 10 weeks pregnant. They give her brochures about adoption and show a horror-show propaganda video. (Hittman never says it outright, but the “clinic” has the earmarks of an anti-abortion “crisis pregnancy center. ”) Read the full review at The Movie Cricket: Popular Lists More.

Dramatic Special Jury Award for Neorealism Autumn, a stoic, quiet teenager, is a cashier in a rural Pennsylvania supermarket. Faced with an unintended pregnancy and without viable alternatives for termination in her home state, she and her cousin Skylar scrape up some cash, pack a suitcase, and board a bus to New York City. With only a clinic address in hand and nowhere to stay, the two girls bravely venture into the unfamiliar city. Writer-director Eliza Hittman ( It Felt Like Love, Beach Rats) masterfully creates a spartan cinematic language through gestures and details, where subtext is just as important as written dialogue. Cinematographer Hélène Louvart shoots on 16 mm film, evoking a grainy, bleak, and stark atmosphere, capturing the young actors, Sidney Flanigan and Talia Ryder (both discoveries), in intimate close-ups that accentuate the complexity of their natural, minimalist performances. With bracing clarity and understated emotion, Hittman fearlessly tells the story of a teenage girl making an arduous journey, through which a bigger statement emerges—that of reclaiming her body and her spirit. I had abdominal surgery 5 days ago and my stitches! OMG! LOL. Re: age of innocence. I don't know about south Australia, but in mid-America (Arkansas) small town life in the 1950's we children had a lot of freedom. We town kids walked to and from school until we were old enough to have cars. With both parents working we did in fact go by ourselves to each other's homes, to the swimming pool, empty lots to play ball. In many ways it was like a village, with people paying attention to anything or anyone unusual or out of place. Times and places are indeed different. The argument about the failures of parents, police, etc, is not the point.

I just watched the trailer for this movie and offered a prayer for every girl, and her baby) who finds themselves in this situation. I genuinely hope things turn out well for everybody; including the girls in the movie. Jennifer Jason Leigh's face looks so strange now. If you don't want to deal with an unwanted pregnancy, keep your legs closed. I feel no sympathy for women who place no lasting value on the precious gift that should be shared between them and their husbands only.
